Presentation
For over 20 years, the GER Master's program has been offering top-level training in geology for the exploration of fluid and mineral resources, in line with the energy transition. The international recognition and high placement rate of this Master's degree stems from its specialization in the analysis of natural objects (40% practical field work in M1, and analysis on geomodellers in M2), as well as its close links between top-level academic research and companies in the georesources sector (fluids, minerals, geothermal energy, storage, etc.).
Objectives
Montpellier occupies a privileged geographical position thanks to its proximity to a variety of geological terrains, enabling teaching and research of excellence in the fields of resource exploration for the energy transition. This region enables the study of geological reservoirs from their formation to their current or future use (fluids, minerals, metals, storage, geothermal energy).
The GER Master's degree trains students in the fundamentals required by exploration geologists (structural, sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic geology, etc.). High-level teaching is provided by lecturers and/or researchers from the academic world (Géosciences Montpellier laboratory), as well as by experts from the global georesources industry in M2. The concepts acquired in the classroom are systematically applied in the form of practical work in the field (1 to 2 days per week on average). In addition, 4 field internships (including one long-term internship in Spain) enable students to hone the skills that are essential for the job of exploration geologist.
Professional internships lasting 2 months in M1 and 5 to 6 months in M2 are carried out in companies or laboratories, benefiting from a network of national and international partners. These industrial partners support the program, recruit students and are involved in the Master's steering committee. The program also offers the possibility of a 3-year dual degree course with IMT Mines Alès.
Numerous extra-curricular activities are offered independently:
- Project management and geological study trips (Morocco, Iceland, Romania, Scotland, Spain, etc.), sponsorship and teamwork via the Student Chapter.
- Participation in numerous conferences and competitions (24h de l'Innovation, Salon de l'Industrie Minérale, Réunion des Sciences de la Terre, Journées Portes Ouvertes de la FDS) and oceanographic campaigns.
