Presentation
The GER Master's degree offers a high-level training in geology for the exploration of fluid and mineral resources, in connection with the energy transition. The international recognition and high placement rate of this Master's degree comes from its specialization in the analysis of natural objects (40% of practical fieldwork in M1, and analysis on geomodellers in M2), as well as its close links between academic research of excellence and "major" companies in the industrial sector (hydrocarbons, mineral resources, geothermal energy, storage, etc).
Objectives
The GER Master's degree is based on a common core aimed at acquiring the fundamentals necessary for the exploration geologist. High-level teaching is provided by teachers and/or researchers from the academic world (Géosciences Montpellier laboratory), as well as by experts from the global georesources industry (Total, Schlumberger, Orano, Eramet, Imerys, etc.) up to 70% in M2.
The concepts acquired in class are systematically applied in the form of practical work deported to the field (1 to 2 days a week on average). In addition, 4 internships spread over the course allow students to perfect the skills essential to the profession of exploration geologist.
Montpellier occupies a privileged geographical position due to its proximity to various types of terrain (structural, sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic geology, etc.), allowing excellent teaching and research in the fields of geological exploration. This region allows the study of geological reservoirs (fluids, minerals, metals), their establishment, their preservation, their evolution and their current or future use.
The 2nd year of the master's degree offers a specialization in fluid resources (oil, gas, calories, water, contaminants) or mineral resources (industrial minerals and metals, including strategic), with the possibility of following both options.
Professional internships of 2 months in M1 and 5 to 6 months in M2 are carried out in companies or laboratories, benefiting from a network of national and international partners. The course also offers the possibility of following a 3-year dual degree course with IMT Mines Alès.
Many extracurricular activities are offered independently:
- Project management and realization of geological study trips (Morocco, Iceland, Romania, Scotland, Spain, etc.), search for sponsors and teamwork via the Student Chapter.
- Participation in numerous congresses and competitions (RST, 24h de l'Innovation, student fair, Geologia, SIM, Imperial Barrel Award, training and coaching for applications via CV-Associés).
