Presentation
For more than 20 years, the GER Master's program has offered excellent training in the exploration geology of fluid and mineral resources, in line with the energy transition. The international recognition and high placement rate of this Master's program stems from its specialization in the analysis of natural objects (40% of practical work in the field in M1, and analysis on geomodels in M2), as well as its close links between high-level academic research and companies in the georesources sector (fluids, minerals, geothermal energy, storage, etc.).
Objectives
Montpellier occupies a privileged geographical location due to its proximity to varied geological terrain, enabling teaching and research excellence in the fields of resource exploration for energy transition. This region allows for the study of geological reservoirs from their formation to their current or future sustainable use (fluids, minerals, metals, storage, geothermal energy).
The GER Master's program provides training in the fundamentals required by exploration geologists (structural, sedimentary, magmatic, and metamorphic geology, etc.). High-level teaching is provided by lecturers and/or researchers from academia (Montpellier Geosciences Laboratory), as well as by experts from the global georesources industry in the second year. The concepts learned in class are systematically applied in the form of fieldwork (1 to 2 days per week on average). In addition, four field internships (including a long-term internship in Spain) allow students to perfect the skills essential to the profession of exploration geologist.
Professional internships lasting two months in M1 and five to six months in M2 are carried out in companies or laboratories, benefiting from a network of national and international partners. These industrial partners support the program, recruit students, and are involved in the Master's steering committee. The program also offers the possibility of pursuing a three-year dual degree program with IMT Mines Alès.
Many extracurricular activities are offered independently:
- Project management and organization of geological study trips (Morocco, Iceland, Romania, Scotland, Spain, etc.), search for sponsors, and teamwork via the Student Chapter.
- Participation in numerous conferences and competitions (24 Hours of Innovation, Mineral Industry Trade Show, Earth Sciences Meeting, FDS Open House) and oceanographic campaign.
