Description
Case study of the Montpellier overlap front, SW zone of St Paul-et-Valmalle: Mas d'Arnaud – Mas de Fabre – Le Castellas.
Structural geology, conventional and digital field mapping, facies sedimentology, GIS, detailed geological map.
Objectives
- Consolidation of geological mapping knowledge in the field
- Training in the use of a digital tablet in the field to position oneself and acquire geological measurements (dip & GPS points -> fieldmove clino, IGN map, satellite photo)
- Training in digital geological mapping = digitization + integration of data (field/aerial-satellite imagery) on GIS for the creation of a detailed digital geological map + associated database.
Mandatory prerequisites
Course in tectonics (level L3), course in sedimentary dynamics (level M1), introduction to geological mapping (level L3).
Knowledge assessment
Continuous assessment.
Syllabus
- Three days of supervised fieldwork (presentation of study areas and characteristic facies)
- Two three-hour tutorials for GIS training (Qgis): one before the supervised fieldwork, the other before the last outing.
- Additional fieldwork for students only and classroom work
- Digital field tool: one iPad mini per pair.
