Presentation
The Inter Disciplinary - In Lab' project is the University of Montpellier's graduate program. Funded by the Programme d'Investissement d'Avenir 3, it responds to the call for projects "Structuration de la Formation par la Recherche dans les initiatives d'excellence" (SFRI).
The "Master in Chemistry for healthcare, protection and nutrition applications" course focuses on the essentials that guarantee humanity's very existence, and goes far beyond this by organizing the crucial aspects of a healthy, sustainable life in harmony with the environment. Chemistry lies at the heart of the vital concepts that sign, protect and nourish human beings. This course offers you a multi-disciplinary training in chemistry, enriched by biology and pharmaceutical sciences on the one hand, and chemical engineering and materials sciences on the other.
Examples of teaching units :
- Prodrugs and bioprecursors
- Nanotechnologies and multifunctional targering
- Chemobiology
Objectives
The aim of the project is to transform the University's pedagogy by offering students training through Research for Research's sake, by immersing students in laboratories from the Master 1 level onwards.
This MUSE-wide program aims to :
- Offer "inLab" training right from Master 1;
- Promoting interdisciplinarity, particularly around MUSE issues
- Promote the UM's international outlook (international appeal, teaching in English).
- Strengthen the Master's/Doctorate link;
Know-how and skills
Having forged your ability to understand and analyze the diverse and complex issues at stake in human health and its environment, capable of acting both individually and as part of a team, and having acquired real international experience, you'll be key players when it comes to participating in public or private research programs.
Program
The IDIL (Intrdisciplinary In Lab') graduate program at the University of Montpellier opened its doors in September 2022, and aims to train students through and for research via pedagogical innovation. The IDIL courses available are diverse and cover a wide range of disciplines, from bio-health to political science.
Taught entirely in English, IDIL courses enable students to follow their courses through a unique structure based on four main aspects:
- Learning by doing. IDIL programs place a strong emphasis on learning by doing, and include In-lab units as part of the curriculum, as well as a subsidized research internship in M1 and M2. The IDIL program opens the doors to around a hundred laboratories at the University of Montpellier, where students will be working in immersion.
- Customized curriculum. IDIL students can tailor their course to suit their career plans and interests by selecting their courses from three different teaching units: Non Core, In-lab and Transversal. Support is provided to ensure that the curriculum corresponds to the student's chosen orientation.
- Introduction to a new discipline. All IDIL students must choose a Non Core teaching unit, which is an introductory course to a discipline in another IDIL pathway. For example, a Comparative Politics and Public Policy student may take an introductory course in Applied Ecological and Evolutionary Sciences. This arrangement gives students a unique profile, and is an effective way of developing interdisciplinary thinking, a major challenge in modern research.
- Mentoring. Throughout the IDIL program, students will be coached by a researcher from the Montpellier laboratories. The mentor's role is to prepare the student for the internship, teach theory through various workshops, and develop the student's professional network.

Necessary prerequisites
Having completed a bachelor's degree in chemistry or other equivalent, this pathway provides in-depth, up-to-date training in molecular and macromolecular chemistry and materials chemistry applied to health and the environment (from eco-design to recycling), combined with training in research in our leading laboratories.
And then
Professional integration
Although IDIL courses are research-oriented, they offer an incredible amount of professional experience that can be used in any professional environment. How to work as part of a team, how to manage a project, how to use data are just some of the softskills taught during this program.
