Presentation

The Water Health Contaminants pathway provides the skills needed to characterize water quality, and in particular the techniques used to monitor contaminants and assess their impact on the quality of water resources and the associated health and environmental risks. This program is open to sandwich courses (apprenticeship and professionalization contract) in M1 and/or M2.

Know-how and skills

On completion of the course, students should be able to :

- formulate a problem, implement an appropriate sampling strategy, choose measurement tools, critically analyze data

- be familiar with standards, methods and reference systems adapted to contaminants

- adapt to developments in techniques for monitoring contaminants in water (analysis, bioanalysis)

- identify contaminants that can cause health problems, depending on the different uses of water

- select relevant data to assess the health and ecological risks associated with contamination of the aquatic environment

- write a report on results, present aquatic monitoring results and discuss health and ecological risks

- maintain an active scientific watch (toxicological data, emerging contaminants) and technological watch (new tools)

- dialogue and cooperate with partners from a variety of backgrounds, both specialists and non-specialists

International dimension

This pathway also offers opportunities for mobility and double diplomas, notably with the University of Barcelona, as part of the Master Agua program: students have the opportunity to do their end-of-year M1 internship plus S3 at the University of Barcelona, and thus validate a double diploma from the Master Eau program at the University of Montpellier and the Master Agua program at the University of Barcelona (Castilian Spanish language).

Program

This specialization is a university course validated by 120 ECTS. It is made up of 4 semesters, each with 30 ECTS.
The first year of training (S1 and S2), mainly shared with the other Master's courses, enables students to acquire the fundamentals of Water Science. The second year (S3 and S4) is mainly devoted to specialization, in line with the student's career plan and chosen profile (professional or research).
Semesters 1 to 3 comprise disciplinary and technical courses specific to Water Sciences (including field courses), as well as cross-disciplinary courses for the entire Water field.
The teaching offered over the two years is therefore multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary:
- Fundamental courses in Water and Environmental Sciences (hydrology, hydrogeology, chemical
and microbiological water quality)
- Applied courses in Water and Environmental Sciences (integrated water management, land use planning)
- Open courses in cross-disciplinary water-related subjects (social sciences, environment and ecology, legislation, economics, agriculture, English)
- UE covering engineering methods and techniques in the water sciences (sampling and analysis, statistics, geographic information systems, remote sensing, databases, programming, health and environmental risk assessment)
- Engineering UE (interdisciplinary projects, project management)
- Research UE (bibliographical analysis, conferences, individual study projects)
- Internships in companies or laboratories at the end of Master 1 (2 to 4.5 months) and at the end of Master 2 (5 to 6 months).
