Presentation

The professional degree in "Study and Development of Natural Areas" (EDEN) is a year of intensive preparation for careers as senior environmental technicians in the public and private sectors. This scientific training program draws on the experience and research work of the faculty members in the Biology-Ecology Department. Biology-Ecology (BE) at the University of Montpellier and associated research institutes (CNRS, IRD, CIRAD), and their knowledge of the professional management environment, acquired through the expert missions entrusted to them.

The aim of this degree is to train independent naturalist technicians who can critically assess methodological tools and keep up to date with rapid developments in these tools. The program will involve numerous professionals from the environmental sector.

The EDEN bachelor's degree is a three-year program, so you must have completed a two-year degree to be eligible. It runs from September to September and includes a minimum four-month internship and numerous courses. In addition to scientific and naturalist subjects, courses on professional integration tools and regulatory basics are also offered.

The EDEN program is open to students enrolled in the second year of a general bachelor's degree (in Montpellier: Monod portal for bachelor's degrees, Ecology Biology of Organisms and Biology Ecology and Earth Sciences courses), as well as technological courses (e.g., BTS Management and Protection of Nature), with a solid foundation in natural sciences as a prerequisite.

Objectives

Understanding the methods and tools needed for the assessment and management of natural and anthropized spaces.

Acquire scientific knowledge in the implementation of protocols (rigor, relevance, etc.) and in the ability to develop methods (self-training, use of knowledge tracking tools, etc.).

At the end of this course, students should have the skills to implement the biodiversity study methods needed to define management plans or the expert assessments required by public bodies (ONCFS, parks, research laboratories, etc.) or consulting firms. This course includes the ability to critically evaluate objectives and methods.

Organization

Program

The EDEN bachelor's degree corresponds to semesters 5 and 6 of a bachelor's degree in Science.  You must have completed a two-year post-secondary program. There are many pathways to and from other bachelor's degree programs and other courses (IUT, BTS, CPGE, engineering schools, etc.). Alternatively, you can enroll in the Life Sciences bachelor's degree program at the University of Montpellier. The first two years of the program are the same as those of the Life Sciences bachelor's degree program.

Mandatory prerequisites

  • For applicants with a general L2 degree: review of grades since high school (assessment focusing mainly on the final year). An overall average >12 is a positive factor. The choice of Bachelor's degree courses will also be reviewed to determine the consistency of the applicant's academic background.
  • For candidates with BTS and DUT degrees, grades from the last semesters. Ranking in the top quarter of the class is a positive factor.
