Identification of Flora

General Objectives:

Theoretical and field-based analysis: understanding the challenges and limitations of certain taxonomic groups and the methods used to identify flora.

Developing a Personal Approach to Identification

The course is organized into three modules. Each module is open to continuing education students. The order of the modules may be changed depending on the availability of external instructors specializing in the relevant taxonomic groups.

Section 1: Key Characteristics of Plants and Other Groups

Identification Principles and Techniques (Collections, Books, Software)

Diversity and Major Groups (Green Lineage vs. Fungi)

Focus on fungi, lichens, freshwater algae (including characeae), and bryophytes (collections, publications, software)

Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms

3 sessions of 3 hours each, followed by independent work (Pl@ntGame, Pl @ ntNet)

Section 2: Angiosperms

Overview and Getting Started with the Flore-Num Software

Vegetative morphology and floral organs, fruits, and seeds

2 sessions of 3 hours each, followed by independent work on writing a fact sheet about the characteristics of several families

Session 3: Identifying Vascular Plants

Overview of Family Profiles

Overview of the 10 Main Families

2 sessions of 3 hours each
