Presentation
The Biotechnology Teaching Professions (Bio-ME) program is a multidisciplinary scientific course aimed at students who, after obtaining their bachelor's degree, wish to enroll in the MEEF2nd degree Master's program in Biotechnology with a specialization in Biochemistry and Biological Engineering in order to become certified teachers of Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Biological Engineering in high schools.
Objectives
The objective of the Biotechnology Teaching Professions (Bio-ME) course is to provide students with a foundation of knowledge in all the fundamental disciplines included in the CAPET Biotechnology exam program, with a focus on Biochemistry and Biological Engineering.
Thus, the course allows students to acquire:
- fundamental scientific knowledge in biotechnology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, physiology, immunology, cellular and molecular biology;
- expertise in biological analysis technologies in the context of practical work.
After obtaining their bachelor's degree, students can enroll in the MEEFMaster's program in Biotechnology with a specialization in Biochemistry and Biological Engineering in order to prepare for the CAPET Biotechnology competitive examination and become a certified teacher of Biotechnology, Biochemistry, and Biological Engineering in high school.
Know-how and skills
The skills that students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences with a Bio-ME track must acquire are as follows:
- understand key concepts governing biological mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels, drawing on knowledge of the structure and properties of the main molecules of living organisms;
- know how to use concepts and tools from different disciplines to analyze a document, an observation, or the results of an experiment.
- know how to search for and extract information in order to summarize it.
- master the analytical process and develop rigorous scientific reasoning;
- know how to formulate a hypothesis using biological concepts;
- be able to design an experiment and adapt an operating procedure;
- rigorously implement an experimental procedure and develop a critical eye for experimental results in order to respond to and test the validity of a hypothesis;
- be able to develop critical thinking, particularly with regard to cultural and societal dimensions;
- Develop a sense of responsibility through the implementation of experimental activities in biotechnology;
- know how to construct a rigorous argument to justify a choice or statement;
- be able to commit to a project and take initiative;
- interact with peers through oral or written communication.
- Develop oral presentations and written scientific reports using appropriate computer tools.

Admission
Admission requirements
The following students are eligible to apply for L2 SV Bio-ME:
- students who have successfully completed a first year of Life Sciences;
- Students who have obtained a DUT (university technical diploma) in biological engineering, specializing in ABB or IAB;
students with a BTS (advanced vocational training certificate) in applied biology (ABM, BioAC, BioTec, Bioqualité)
Applications can be submitted on the following platforms:
- French and European students: follow the procedure on the University of Montpellier's e-candidat website:https://candidature.umontpellier.fr/candidature/
- International students from outside the EU: follow the "Études en France" procedure: https://pastel.diplomatie.gouv.fr/etudesenfrance/dyn/public/authentification/login.html
Registration procedures
As the Biotechnology Teaching Professions (Bio-ME) program is selective, students must apply via the e-candidat application at the beginning of May (information available on the Montpellier Faculty of Science website). Acceptance is not automatic: it is decided on the basis of the application file by an educational committee.
Target audience
- students who have successfully completed a first year of Life Sciences;
- Students who have obtained a DUT (university technical diploma) in biological engineering, specializing in ABB or IAB;
- Students with a BTS (advanced vocational training certificate) in applied biology (ABM, BioAC, BioTec, Bioqualité).
Mandatory prerequisites
It is necessary to have obtained a Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences or equivalent (BTS or DUT).
Recommended prerequisites
A background in biochemistry, microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, human physiology, and chemistry is recommended.
And after
Continuing education
After completing the L2 and then the L3 Biotechnology Teaching Professions (Bio-ME) programs, students can apply to enroll in the MEEF 2nd degree Biotechnology Master's program with a specialization in Biochemistry and Biological Engineering in order to prepare for the CAPET Biotechnology competitive examination with a specialization in Biochemistry and Biological Engineering.
The generalist and multidisciplinary nature of the SV Bio-ME bachelor's degree also allows students to enroll in a wide range of master's programs in the fields of health and agricultural sciences.
Gateways and reorientation
A student who has successfully completed their second year of Bio-ME and who would like to change direction in their third year to another course within the SV program must obtain the approval of the program directors.
Professional integration
The results achieved by our students have placed the Montpellier Academy in a very strong position in terms of success in the national CAPET Biotechnologies exam, specializing in Biochemistry and Biological Engineering (BGB). Students who pass the exam and have completed their Master's degree automatically become certified teachers of Biochemistry and Biological Engineering in high schools, with the status of civil servants in the French National Education system. Students who have completed their M2 but have not passed the exam are employed as contract or substitute teachers in high schools.
