Presentation

The Biochemistry program within the Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences is a course of study at the intersection of Biology and Chemistry. The various courses offered during the three years of the Bachelor's degree are designed to prepare students for the professional world, but above all for further study in a Master's program or engineering school.

At the University of Montpellier, the Biochemistry program allows students to continue their studies mainly in a Master's degree in Biology-Health or Pharmaceutical Sciences. This demanding program is both generalist, incorporating many disciplines of biology (biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, etc.), and more specific (structural biology, enzymology, biomolecular chemistry, and mathematics for biology).

Open course in Health Access (L.AS).

Objectives

The main objectives are (i) to provide a solid foundation of knowledge for further study in all the disciplines covered, (ii) to guide students towards independence at the end of the three years, and (iii) to stimulate and develop critical and scientific thinking. To achieve these objectives, teaching alternates between theoretical and fundamental concepts and practical lessons. Finally, at the end of this program, the scientific level achieved allows students to enter a Master's program, an engineering school, or any other program requiring a three-year degree.

Know-how and skills

The program offers general theoretical courses in biochemistry, biology, and chemistry, as well as corresponding practical courses.
The training is tailored to the needs of academic and industrial research laboratories.
The skills acquired during this training program are based on
- fundamental knowledge of biochemistry (metabolic, cellular, and structural),
enzymology, molecular biology, genetics, systems biology, etc.
- practical expertise in biochemistry and microbiology
- the ability to analyze and synthesize scientific data
The skills acquired at the interface between biology and chemistry enable students to adapt
to broader, interdisciplinary scientific contexts.

Mandatory prerequisites

For admission to the third year of a bachelor's degree program:

Applications are made via the Faculty of Science's e-Candidat portal after validation of a first year L2 or equivalent.

For students from programs other than L2 SVSE at the University of Montpellier (CPGE, DUT, etc.), we require a solid background in the major disciplines of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and chemistry. BTS students are invited to apply for L2.

The registration process is carried out via the Faculty of Science's e-Candidat portal.

Acceptance is not automatic: it is decided on a case-by-case basis by an educational committee. Our capacity (logistical and human resources) is 40 students in the third year of the Biochemistry program.

And after

Continuing education

At the University of Montpellier, the Biochemistry program within the SVSE Bachelor's degree allows students to continue their studies mainly in a Master's degree in Biology-Health, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or any other Master's degree at a French or foreign university.

It is also possible to enroll in engineering schools specializing in biotechnology, schools in the Polytech network, and prestigious universities.

Professional integration

Although the L3 Biochemistry program is primarily intended for students wishing to continue their studies beyond the Bac+3 level, the SVSE Bachelor's degree can be valuable in academic research as well as industrial research as a technician or assistant engineer in the fields of biology, biochemistry, and at the interface between biology and chemistry.
