Presentation

The Biochemistry pathway of the Life Sciences B.Sc. is a training program at the interface of Biology and Chemistry. The various courses offered over the three years of the Bachelor's degree are designed to prepare students for professional careers, but above all for further study in Master's programs or engineering schools.

At the University of Montpellier, the Biochemistry pathway enables students to pursue their studies mainly in the Biology-Health or Pharmaceutical Sciences Masters programs. This demanding training is both generalist, integrating many disciplines of biology (biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, microbiology, etc.) and more specific (structural biology, enzymology, chemistry of biomolecules or mathematics for biology).

Open Health Access course (L.AS).

Objectives

The main objectives are (i) to provide solid knowledge for further study in all the disciplines covered, (ii) to lead the student, at the end of the three years, towards autonomy and (iii) to awaken and train the critical and scientific mind. To achieve these objectives, teaching alternates between theoretical and fundamental notions and practical courses. At the end of the course, the scientific level attained enables students to enter a Master's degree, an engineering school or any other course requiring a Bac+3.

Know-how and skills

The program offers general theoretical courses in Biochemistry, Biology and Chemistry, and
the corresponding practical courses.
The training is tailored to the needs of academic and industrial research laboratories.
The skills to be acquired during the course are based on
- fundamental knowledge of biochemistry (metabolic, cellular and structural),
enzymology, molecular biology, genetics, systems biology...
- practical know-how in biochemistry and microbiology
- the ability to analyze and synthesize scientific data
All the skills acquired at the Biology-Chemistry interface enable students to adapt
to broader, interdisciplinary scientific contexts.

Necessary prerequisites

For integration into Licence 3:

Applications are made via the Faculty of Science's e-Candidat portal after validation of a first year L2 or equivalent.

For students coming from courses other than L2 SVSE at the University of Montpellier (CPGE, DUT, etc.), we require a solid background in the major disciplines of biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology and chemistry. BTS students are invited to apply for L2.

The registration procedure is carried out via the Faculty of Science's e-Candidat portal.

Acceptance is not automatic: it is decided on the basis of the student's application by a pedagogical committee. Our intake capacity (logistical and human resources) is 40 students in the L3 Biochemistry course.

Further studies

At the University of Montpellier, the Biochemistry pathway in the SVSE Bachelor's degree enables students to go on to study for a Master's degree in Biology-Health, Pharmaceutical Sciences or any other Master's degree at a French or foreign university.

It is also possible to enroll in Biotechnology engineering schools, schools in the Polytech network and grandes écoles.

Professional integration

Although the L3 Biochemistry pathway is primarily intended for further study beyond Bac+3, the SVSE Bachelor's degree can be put to good use in both academic and industrial research as a technician or assistant-engineer in the fields of biology, biochemistry and at the interface of biology and chemistry.
