Presentation
The "Prépa Concours Agro Véto" (PCAV, https://prepa-agroveto.edu.umontpellier.fr/) program is a specific training program offered during the first two years (L1 and L2, 120 ECTS) of the "Life Sciences" bachelor's degree program at the Faculty of Sciences, part of the University of Montpellier. It is part of the Biology-Mechanisms of Life (Bio-MV, https://biologie-mv-fds.edu.umontpellier.fr/) teaching department.
Its objectives are to provide students with a solid foundation in multidisciplinary scientific knowledge, with a focus on biology (second-year undergraduate level), and to prepare them for the competitive entrance exams for national agricultural and veterinary schools (national competitive exams organized by the Service des Concours Agronomiques et Vétérinaires - https://www.concours-agro-veto.net/ and accessible from 2021 to students who hold or are enrolled in L2).
The PCAV program is an intensive L1 and L2 program (30 to 34 ECTS per semester) offered to a small number of students (maximum 30 per level) selected on the basis of their academic record in order to ensure a high level of supervision and continuous assessment. Applications for admission to L2 PCAV are made via the Faculty of Science's e-Candidat software platform (https://sciences.edu.umontpellier.fr/venir-etudier-a-la-faculte-des-sciences/). The quality of the academic record and the maturity of the training and/or professional project described in a detailed cover letter are important selection criteria.
The PCAV program is spread over the first four semesters of the bachelor's degree (L1 and L2). It includes subject-specific courses, particularly in life sciences, but also chemistry, mathematics, and physics, as well as cross-disciplinary courses in methodology and languages. This foundation is supplemented by specific modules to reinforce chemistry and prepare students for the oral exams of the B competitive examination.
The PCAV program is therefore designed to prepare students for admission to national agricultural and veterinary schools, but other courses of study are possible thanks to the validation of the 120 ECTS credits earned in the program, including a third-year degree in life sciences.
Regarding the specializations to choose in high school in preparation for further studies in the PCAV program and preparation for the B BIO and B ENV competitive exams, the specialization "Life and Earth Sciences" or "Biology-Ecology" is highly recommended. Reinforced instruction in mathematics and physics-chemistry will also be beneficial.
Objectives
The Agro-Veto Preparatory Course is a specialized training program offered during the first two years of the Life Sciences bachelor's degree program. Its objectives are:
- Acquisition of knowledge and skills in Life Sciences (Bachelor's degree level) covering all organisms (animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria) and various scales (from molecules to cells, organism physiology, and population biology, up to the scales of communities, ecosystems, and biomes).
- The acquisition of cross-disciplinary scientific knowledge and skills in chemistry, mathematics, and physics that are important for continuing scientific studies and pursuing a related career.
- Preparation for written and oral exams for entrance to national agricultural and veterinary schools (B BIO and B ENV exams, organized by these schools).
Know-how and skills
The skills that will be acquired by following this course are:
- Consolidate in-depth knowledge of biological processes at different scales, the foundation of a Level 2 degree; master key concepts.
- Enrich this knowledge with an openness to its applications, biotechnologies, issues of climate change and biodiversity loss, the relationship between science and society, etc.
- Mastering key concepts and methods in chemistry, mathematics, and physics, enabling a multidisciplinary approach to life sciences.
- Use this knowledge to scientifically analyze specific experimental results, interpret them critically, and discuss them with perspective.
- Understanding and applying scientific analysis and experimentation, particularly in the context of diagnosing problems, proposing interventions, implementing them, and evaluating their effects (an approach common to agricultural engineers and veterinarians in particular)
- Communicate the summary of this work in writing and orally in a clear and rigorous manner.
- Carry out this work in an organized and independent manner, individually or in a group.
Organization
Program
The PCAV program is organized over the four semesters of the first and second years of the Bachelor's degree in Life Sciences.
Its training offering includes:
- cross-disciplinary teaching modules, common to certain other Life Sciences bachelor's degree programs, particularly concerning biology (from molecules to ecosystems), support courses in chemistry, mathematics, physics, languages (English), and methodology.
- Specific teaching units specific to this program: advanced biology, advanced chemistry, and preparation for the written chemistry exam for the B ENV competitive exam (in L1 and L2 PCAV, for all students in the program), preparation for the oral exam "Science and Society" " (L2 PCAV), preparation for the oral exam "Interview with the jury" (L2 PCAV) (these oral exams are common to the B BIO and B ENV competitive examinations).
The list of teaching units can be found on the Faculty of Science website.

Gateways and reorientation
Changes of direction between Life Sciences degree courses, in particular, are possible between the first and second years.
Professional integration
The PCAV program is not a vocational training program as such. However, given its nature, an important indicator is the admission rate to Concours B exams for students following the program. The following results concern Concours B exams organized by the Concours Department between 2015 and 2020 (exams at the end of L3):
- B-BIO: 15 to 22 PCAV students admitted per year, representing 80 to 100% of PCAV students who register for the entrance exam (national average admission rate is approximately 55% of those who register).
- B-ENV: 0 to 2 PCAV students admitted per year (9 students/18 in 2019), representing generally 5 to 15% of PCAV students who register for the entrance exam (national average admission rate approximately 15% of registrants)
