Description
The GIS Practice course consists of training in the use of Geographic Information Systems, incorporating basic concepts relating to geographic information and proficiency in the free software QGIS. Most of the course is devoted to an introduction through a combination of lectures and practical exercises. A personalized summary mapping project allows students at the end of the course to review the concepts they have learned. An introductory lecture with professionals provides perspective on the value of GIS approaches in general hydrology.
Objectives
The objectives of this EU are:
- to provide training in the basic concepts of GIS and spatial databases;
- to provide students with basic skills in using a standard GIS tool: QGIS.

The map produced during the project and the associated metadata constitute the project evaluation.
Syllabus:
The content of the course is structured around six successive lecture/practical sessions:
1- Getting started with a GIS - general GIS concepts,
2- Geographic data
3- Relational databases
4- MNT,
5- Vectors,
6- Graphic semiology.
It continues with an individual or pair mapping project.
