Description
Introductory research internship in a university laboratory
Dates: May-June
Duration: 7 weeks minimum, extendable in July
Prior to the internship, the analysis of an article suggested by the internship tutors prepares the student for the theme of the internship, and for in-depth reading of scientific publications.
After the internship, as part of a peer review process, students submit their written report and oral presentation to the critical eye of other students, who are responsible for improving them before they are submitted to the internship jury.
Objectives
This internship is the student's first contact with the world of laboratory research. It will enable them to interact with a research team and begin to discover the research topics they will prefer to develop in their future studies.
- Internship in a research laboratory
- Reinvestment of experimental theories and practices in a research context
- Conducting research projects
- Managing and adapting to professional contexts
- Analysis and synthesis of scientific literature
- Written and oral communication, possibly in a foreign language
- Peer review, training in scientific ethics and deontology
Knowledge control
- Evaluation of the course: 40% of the time
- Written report (maximum 30 pages): 25%.
- Oral defense (~10 minutes of defense, ~10 minutes of questions): 25%.
- Oral presentation of article analysis: 5%.
- Peer review: 5%.
Syllabus
This laboratory internship, in the Phymatech program's field of expertise, is designed to give students their first experience of scientific research, as well as their first professional experience.
The aim of article analysis is to confront the student with scientific literature, so that he or she can identify, select and critically analyze various specialized resources for documenting a subject, and synthesize this information with a view to exploiting it.
Peer review of the report and defense is designed to teach students how to evaluate other work, thus improving their self-assessment skills, and to introduce them to the principles of scientific ethics, deontology and peer review specific to the scientific community.
The report and oral presentation train students to communicate orally and in writing, in French or a foreign language, for training or knowledge transfer purposes.
