Description
Polymers are all around us: we eat them, we wear them, we build extremely complex buildings from them. From mature technologies to the most innovative materials, polymers are a crucial building block to build the world of tomorrow. In this course, we will address several aspects such as the controlled synthesis of polymers and cross-linked materials, surface modification by polymers, some characterization tools adapted to polymers and finally a last part developing the latest advances involving polymers.
Hourly volumes* :
CM : 13h
TD : 7h
Objectives
The objective of this course is to use the knowledge acquired by the students in macromolecular chemistry for the advanced preparation and characterization of polymers. At the end of this course, students will be able to choose a preparation method adapted to a targeted function, and to master the parameters of this process.
Necessary pre-requisites
L3 Chemistry / Macromolecular chemistry (HAC508C) / Polymeric materials (HAC610C)
Basic organic chemistry, reactions in solution, colloids, interfaces
Knowledge control
Final exam 100%.
Syllabus
- Introduction/reminders on polymers (brief history of polymers, structure, molar mass distributions, dispersity)
- Synthesis by controlled radical polymerization
- Stepwise polymerization of multifunctional monomers: synthesis of gels and other cross-linked materials
- Surface modification by polymers (grafting, chemisorption...)
New applications of polymers (self-healing, vitrimers...)
