Description
Knowledge of the latest mass spectrometry techniques for the qualitative analysis of organic molecules and biomolecules.
1) Description of fundamental principles (Ion Science and Technology) :
- Ionization techniques
- Analysis techniques
- Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)
- LC/MS and LC/MS/MS couplings
2) Application in biomolecule analysis and organic chemistry reaction monitoring.

Objectives
Be able to determine the mass spectrometry techniques best suited to the analysis of an organic molecule and a biomolecule.
Understand and be able to analyze the strategy implemented to follow a given synthesis.
Necessary prerequisites
Mass spectrometry, level L3 :
Basic concepts (production/measurement of ions in the gas phase, instrumental diagram)
Organic chemistry, L3 level :
Reactivity basics
Biomolecule Chemistry, M1 level:
Knowledge of the various families (structures, properties)

Syllabus
Course: Inductive (problem-based) and deductive pedagogy, Support(s) available on ENT (Moodle): Course documents, TD documents, exam annals and reference publications.

- Ion production and transfer in the gas phase,
- Sensitivity and detection limit,
- Measurement accuracy and resolution.
- Ionization methods: (3 H)
- Ambient technologies,
- Desorption technologies.
- Analytical methods: (3 H)
- Low-resolution analyzers,
- High-resolution analyzers.
- Tandem mass spectrometry: (3 H)
- Principle of MS/MS,
- Configuration of analyzers (dissociations in space, in time, iterative),
- Vibrational and electronic activation methods.
- Coupled techniques: (3 H)
- Principle of LC/MS,
- Principle of LC/MS/MS.
Tutorials (5 hours): Individual work, exercises to be prepared before and during the session.
Case studies (interpretation of MS and MS/MS spectra of biomolecules, interpretation of LC/MS and LC/MS/MS data for reaction monitoring in organic chemistry/biomolecular chemistry).
