Description
This course aims to describe the synthesis tools applied to complex and polyfunctional molecules. Retrosynthetic and stereocontrolled approaches will be discussed, as well as the judicious use of protective groups.
Hourly volumes*:
CM: 9 a.m.
Field: 11 a.m.
Objectives
Be able to propose several solutions for synthesizing target molecules and justify your choices.
Teaching hours
- Multi-step synthesis - CMLecture9 a.m.
Mandatory prerequisites
Advanced organic chemistry; reaction mechanisms
Knowledge assessment
2-hour final written exam:
- Authorized documents: no
- Non-graphing calculator permitted: yes
- Internet access: no
Syllabus
Course: Retrosynthesis; multistep synthesis; stereocontrol synthesis; protective groups; analysis of publications.
Practical work: The multi-step syntheses studied in practical work will be based on a theoretical understanding of the reactions carried out and the appropriate treatments to be performed. Time management, experiment planning, organization of experimental synthesis techniques (extraction, distillation, recrystallization, chromatography), and methods for characterizing the organic compounds obtained will be necessary to successfully complete these syntheses. The skills acquired by students during these practicals are:
- Implement an experimental protocol in French or English in accordance with good laboratory practices.
- Work independently and with others.
- Analyze and interpret the results obtained.
- Write a report describing the procedures performed, the characterizations of the products obtained, and the analyses of these products.
- Present the work done.
