Strategies and Tools in Organic Synthesis

The course on strategies and tools in organic synthesis focuses on developing a deeper understanding of strategies for synthesizing molecules—whether or not they are derived from nature—using the tools of organic chemistry.

Hourly volumes*:

TD: 5 hours

Understand and be able to implement and plan the strategy for a given synthesis (key step, regio- and chemoselectivity, use of protecting groups, etc.)

Organic Chemistry (L3 Level)

2-hour final written exam:

Course: Inductive (problem-based) and deductive pedagogy. Materials available on the digital learning platform (Moodle): Course materials, tutorial materials, past exam questions, and reference publications.

1. Review of the Fundamentals of Retrosynthesis/Protecting Groups/Regio- and Chemo-Selectivity: (3 hours)
2. Ionic and Radical Approaches to Bond Formation (3 hours)
3. Cyclization Reactions (Baldwin’s Rules, Thorpe-Ingold Effect, etc.) (3 hours)
4. Multicomponent reaction (3 hours)
5. Applications in Biomolecule Synthesis (3 hours)

Tutorial (5 hours): Individual work; exercises to be prepared before and during the session. Case studies
