Presentation
The Licence de Physique is a three-year course which constitutes the first stage of higher education. It is accessible to students with a scientific baccalaureate and allows them to acquire fundamental knowledge in general, theoretical and experimental physics, from classical physics to modern physics, but also in mathematics and computer programming with a progressive specialization in L3 towards Fundamental Physics or Physics and its Applications. The CUPGE Physics and Mathematics program (Cycle Universitaire Préparatoire aux Grandes Écoles) from L1 to L3 offers an in-depth bi-disciplinary training. A brief presentation of the different courses of the Physics License can be downloaded here : Presentation of the Physics License.
Open course in Health Access (L.AS).
Objectives
The training allows students to progressively acquire mastery of the basic concepts of physics and the use of mathematical and numerical tools to analyze, describe and model a physical system. They develop their critical sense, skills to carry out experimental projects independently and to communicate their results in writing and orally, in French and in English. These are the knowledge, skills and know-how necessary for further study in the Master's courses in Fundamental Physics and Applications in Montpellier or more generally in all Masters in Physics or at the interfaces, in France and abroad. The program also allows students to continue their studies in engineering schools, either by taking a competitive examination or by taking a competitive examination, or to enter the job market directly at the end of the third year of study, for example by taking a competitive examination. At the end of the second year, it is also possible to move on to a short professionalization course by integrating a Licence Pro in L3 such as the L3 Pro Couleur in Montpellier.
Physics Degree Opportunities for PASS Students
The Bachelor of Physics aims at providing students with the mastery of fundamental knowledge ranging from classical physics to modern physics. It is based on a theoretical and experimental approach offering a progressive specialization via the two courses Fundamental Physics and Physics and Applications in L3. It also allows students to enter engineering schools at the end of the L2 or L3.
The primary vocation of the training is the pursuit of studies in Master of Physics in France or abroad. The Master Fundamental Physics and Applications of Montpellier proposes 8 courses covering many fields of Physics and its interfaces with in particular the course Physics of Living Matter which aims at opportunities in fundamental research, the diagnostic and biomedical industries, imaging platforms and biotechnologies.
It is also possible to integrate the course Biomedical Physics (PhyMed) of the Master's degree in Science and Digital Health, which is a transdisciplinary course in Science and Health. The opportunities are mainly in technology companies, in consulting and IT service companies and with health actors. A presentation of this course can be downloaded here.
Know-how and skills
Students in the Fundamental Physics program learn to master all the concepts of classical physics (mechanics, optics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, etc.) and modern physics (quantum mechanics, special relativity, corpuscular physics, etc.) as well as the theoretical formalization of a physical system. In the Physics and Applications program, the deepening of knowledge in L3 is essentially focused on the major fields of applied physics (electronics, energetics, optics, nuclear, acoustics...) and the associated technologies. Finally, the CUPGE Physics and Mathematics course allows students to acquire additional disciplinary skills in Mathematics and Mechanics, which are necessary to take the competitive exams of certain major engineering schools at the end of the L3.
Generally speaking, the jobs held by our students are in many areas of public or private economic and industrial life (research, development, design, control, production, teaching). They hold positions as executives, senior managers, and engineers.
Program
In L2, the Bachelor of Physics offers two complementary courses:
The students of the Physics course enter the PCSI portal grouping together the Physics, Mechanics, EEA, Physics-Chemistry and Chemistry menus in the first year (L1), continue in the second year of the Physics Licence(L2P) and then specialize in the third year by choosing the Fundamental Physics course(L3PF) or the Physics and Applications course(L3PA). The CUPGE Physics and Mathematics course is part of the Mathematics and Applications portal in L1, and is then linked to the PF course of the Physics License in the second and third years.

Admission
Conditions of access
Access to the second year is open to candidates with 60 Bachelor's degree credits or after validation of a diploma in the corresponding field. For example, CPGE specialties MPSI, PCSI, PTSI or DUT Mesures Physiques, PASS with a Science minor... Students with other degrees may apply. Their file will be examined by the pedagogical admissions committee.
Finally, some UM students in reorientation have access by right to the L2 Physics subject to having validated the 60 ECTS of L1 (ex. CPGE, PASS).
How to register
Applications for admission to the L2 Physics program must be made via the online application eCandidat. For foreign students outside the EU, depending on their nationality of origin, the application file may be processed through the CampusFrance system.
