Description
In the lectures for this course unit, we describe each stage of the life cycle, beginning with embryonic development (including organ formation, cell differentiation, and growth processes), moving on to the acquisition of reproductive capacity (including the stages associated with meiosis and gametogenesis), and concluding with fertilization. This life cycle is discussed in detail in metazoans and angiosperms, and helps you consolidate your knowledge of the transmission of genetic information. This will enable us to solve problems in Mendelian genetics—including those involving sex-linked effects or epistasis—during the tutorials for this course unit.
Objectives
After completing this course unit, you should be able to describe the different stages of an organism’s life cycle (vertebrate or angiosperm), define the stages of alternation between the haploid and diploid phases, characterize the stages of cell differentiation, and solve problems in Mendelian genetics, including those involving sex-linked effects or epistasis.
Class Hours
- Life Cycle 1 - TutorialTutorials12 hours
- Life Cycle 1 - CMLecture22.5 hours
Mandatory Prerequisites
Among the course units in the L1S1 program, you must have successfully completed:
HAV101V From Molecules to Cells: Students are expected to have a solid understanding of the components of the cell and their functions
HAV107B From Cells to Organisms: Students are expected to have a solid understanding of the functions performed by any multicellular biological organism, as well as an understanding of the diversity of these organisms
HAV108B From Organisms to Ecosystems: Students are expected to have a basic understanding of the relationship between an organism and its environment
Recommended prerequisites*:
In addition to the knowledge covered in L1S1, it is recommended that students have experience solving high school-level problems in Mendelian genetics, understand the processes of mitosis and meiosis, and know the differences between these two processes.
Knowledge Assessment
Mastery of the skills covered in this unit will be assessed through a final exam.
