Description
This course aims to provide a foundation in astronomy and astrophysics, which will be useful in the other astrophysics courses in the master’s program. It also illustrates how concepts from physics are applied to describe astrophysical objects. Most of the concepts covered here will be explored in greater depth later in thesecond-year courses.
Objectives
- Be familiar with the terminology and common orders of magnitude in astrophysics
- Be familiar with the main observational tools and techniques
- Perform basic astrometric and photometric calculations
- Understand the processes of electromagnetic radiation in an astrophysical context
- Understand the basics of how a spectrum is formed and how to interpret it
- Understand methods for measuring distance and their limitations
- Understand the basics of stellar physics
- Build a simple model of a stellar structure
