Objectives
Master the fundamentals of designing and simulating CMOS analog and digital blocks.
To enable students to analyze, simulate, and characterize the CMOS AOP circuits most commonly used in the microelectronics industry (2- or 3-stage CMOS AOP circuits), as well as certain more conceptually advanced structures (such as transconductance amplifiers (OTAs)).
To enable students to use a digital integrated circuit design flow using specific industry-standard tools (CAD).
Mandatory Prerequisites
Basics of Electronics.
Recommended prerequisites*:
Understand the different types of transistors and logic circuits
Knowledge Assessment
Assessment is based on an exam and ongoing evaluation. The ongoing evaluation is calculated as the average of the lecture/tutorial reports, the tutorial/lab reports, and an exam-style written assignment.
Course Outline
The course is divided into two parts:
- a section on digital electronics and microelectronics manufacturing processes
- an analog electronic component
The lecture portion of the analog section takes the form of group lectures and tutorials. Sessions begin with a review of relevant concepts, and students then work in groups on assigned exercises. During the session, the instructor periodically checks in to provide additional information or revisit topics that students do not seem to have mastered. At the end of the session, each group submits a report. For the lab sessions in both the analog and digital sections, the structure is more of a lecture-lab format, where a theoretical study must be conducted before performing simulations on computers. The computer is used solely to illustrate manufacturing processes and validate the preceding theoretical studies.
