Description
In this (hands-on) teaching unit, we will first introduce the general concepts of synthetic biology, which will then be applied to student team projects (assessed). We will provide background knowledge to understand the set of fundamental concepts, approaches and current tools of synthetic biology that will be exploited throughout the course and practical sessions, ranging from gene design and synthesis to genetic library construction, from fluorescence measurements (e.g. plate readers. ) to flow cytometers.
Objectives
In this EU, students will learn the basic engineering concepts of standardization, abstraction hierarchies, forward/reverse engineering and systems control theory with their applications in synthetic biology.
At the end of the course, students will be able to reproduce each step of the Design-Build-Test (DBT) cycle of the proposed projects, and extend this approach to other problems.
Necessary pre-requisites
Good knowledge of basic biochemistry and molecular biology.
Basics of programming in Python.
Concepts explained in the Introduction to quantitative biology course (HAV713V) which will be taught in parallel to this course.
Recommended prerequisites:
Bootcamp (HAV704V)
