Description
In this (practical) teaching unit, we will first introduce the general concepts of synthetic biology, which will then be applied to (assessed) student team projects. We will provide basic knowledge to understand the full range of fundamental concepts, approaches and current tools of synthetic biology that will be exploited throughout the course and practical sessions, ranging from gene design and synthesis to genetic library construction, from fluorescence measurements (e.g. plate readers. ) to flow cytometers.
Objectives
In this UE, students will learn the basic engineering concepts of standardization, abstraction hierarchies, direct/reverse engineering and systems control theory with their applications in synthetic biology.
At the end of the course, students will be able to reproduce each stage of the Design-Build-Test (DBT) cycle of the proposed projects, and extend this approach to other problems.
Necessary prerequisites
Good knowledge of basic biochemistry and molecular biology.
Python programming basics.
Concepts explained in the Introduction to quantitative biology course (HAV713V), which will be taught in parallel with this course.
Recommended prerequisites :
Bootcamp (HAV704V)
