Objectives

Strengthen and consolidate language skills based on the five language competencies described by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), in order to prepare students for a professional environment where English may be used in a variety of ways:

· Interactions in English with foreign colleagues.

· Use of equipment, software, and user manuals in English only.

· Participation in international training courses, seminars, or conferences.

Specific objectives:

· Increased practice in oral expression.

· Vocabulary and grammar: basic communication skills enabling students to describe and discuss materials and equipment (learning and communicating how to use them); particular attention to the use of the passive voice (used to describe materials and methods)

· Technical and specific vocabulary: consumables (samples, products, etc.) and equipment (machine parts, computer language, etc.).

Syllabus

· Listening comprehension – Audiovisual materials: for example, a tutorial video on how to use equipment.

· Reading comprehension – Based on instruction manuals or articles and reviews from scientific publications.

· Oral expression in interaction – Interviews and group work: for example, solving a technical problem (during a telephone conversation with a technician/technical support)

· Written expression – Writing instructions, protocols, and descriptions of technical procedures.

· Oral expression in individual presentations: presentation of an experiment or piece of equipment.
