Description

This required course will enable students to build on the skills they acquired in “Biochemistry S3.” It will help them understand cellular metabolism by:

-an understanding of bioenergetics in order to study the processes by which living cells transport, transmit, utilize, store, and release energy;
-the study of the catabolism and anabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleotides, and amino acids, as well as the metabolic interactions between these pathways.

- a description of metabolic disorders.

Objectives

-Knowledge:

Understand the laws of thermodynamics and redox reactions;

Gain a deeper understanding of carbohydrate metabolism, including neoglucogenesis, the pentose phosphate pathway, glycogen, and oxidative phosphorylation;

Understand the anabolism and catabolism of nucleotides, amino acids, and lipids;

Understand the regulatory mechanisms of each metabolic pathway, as well as the connections and coordination among them;

The objective of this unit is to create a metabolic map.

-Interpersonal skills:

Be able to follow the lessons;

Be able to organize oneself, work independently, and produce consistent work even without supervision;

Be motivated;

Be able to make the connection between courses in enzymology and metabolism and courses in physiology and cellular/molecular biology;

Be able to synthesize information.
