Paleoenvironments and Biostratigraphy

The purpose of this course unit is to synthesize the concepts and knowledge acquired in L1 and L2 (stratigraphy, sedimentology, and the history of life) and to reinforce them with concepts from sedimentology, biostratigraphy, and anatomy. When combined, these concepts provide the keys to surface geology for analyzing and reconstructing ancient depositional environments and for interpreting their fossil content within a temporal context.

This course unit provides knowledge that is useful for continuing studies in certain master’s programs (surface geology in general, the UM Master’s in Exploration and Reservoir Geology, and the UM Master’s in Paleontology).

- Apply fundamental concepts and their applications in sedimentology, stratigraphy, and paleontology to address a problem in the field and/or analyze a research paper or presentation

- Identify and select various specialized resources to research a topic
