Introduction to the Experimental Sciences

This course will introduce the scientific method and its application, with an emphasis on sampling strategy and its impact on data quality and interpretation. It will also introduce the APP methodology and the group work it entails. Working in groups of five, students will conduct a sampling exercise to address a scientific problem. Each group will define its strategy and protocol, collect data from its sampling, and analyze it. The results from each group will be compared with one another, allowing students to identify the variables that the sampling strategy

The curriculum for this course unit will be organized as follows:

• 3 1.5-hour lectures (registered as a tutorial)
• 10 1.5-hour tutorials
• 2.5 days of fieldwork (reported as a practical)

• Understand and apply the scientific method,
• Develop a sampling strategy and sampling protocol tailored to the objective of the scientific study,
• Adapt one's protocol and strategy to account for on-site constraints
• Analyze and report field data
• Give an oral presentation on a field study in English and French
