Objectives
Objectives* :
The main aim of this unit is to define the notions of population (a group of individuals whose size and genetic composition are monitored, and which evolves), species (a set of populations exchanging genes), community (a set of species playing a similar role in an ecosystem) and ecosystem (a biocenosis in a biotope, whose energy flows and exchanges of matter are studied). It provides an initial vision of evolution by natural selection, while acknowledging the role of chance. It connects elements of organism biology (diet, habitat) with relationships between species in an ecosystem (biotic interactions, food chain, flows of matter and energy). It enables us to apply the main principles of organism sampling, and to define an initial approach to biodiversity. It considers all these concepts in their application to conservation biology and the use of sustainable resources, familiarizing students in particular with the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (1992).
