Description
The course unit “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Cell 2” complements the course unit “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Cell 1,” which will be held concurrently. In this course unit, students will apply and expand upon the theoretical knowledge acquired in “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the Cell 1.”
Objectives
Knowledge:
- Understand the general functioning of the cell cycle (mitosis and meiosis will be covered)
- Study of the consequences of a disruption in the cycle (cancers, etc.)
Expertise:
- Apply knowledge of cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology to address a problem in the field or analyze experimental data (including micrographs).
- Know how to use a photonic microscope
- Follow an experimental protocol
- Prepare a simple cytological/histological specimen
- Perform specific staining techniques that allow organelles to be observed under a light microscope
- Master the squash technique for observing dividing eukaryotic cells
- Draw a labeled diagram of a microscopic observation, maintaining the correct proportions of the various cellular components
- Draw a scale on a drawing or a micrograph
- Write a lab report (including the objective, procedure, labeled diagrams, comments, and conclusion)
- Synthesize one's knowledge in order to apply it in writing
-Interpersonal skills:
- Work independently or as part of a team
- Write a report within a specified time frame
- Follow the health and safety rules for a lab
