Description
In this course unit, we will explore each stage of the life cycle of organisms (primarily metazoans and angiosperms) through a series of laboratory exercises covering: embryonic development (including organ formation, cell differentiation, and growth processes), the acquisition of reproductive capacity (including the stages associated with meiosis and gametogenesis), and fertilization. This series of lab sessions is accompanied by a series of tutorials designed to address issues related to the transmission of genetic information.
Objectives
Upon completing this course unit, you should be able to identify, based on histological sections, the cell types responsible for developmental dynamics, growth, and reproduction in angiosperms and metazoans; and to solve problems in Mendelian genetics involving effects related to dominance, sex, and epistasis.
Class Hours
- Life Cycle 2 - TutorialTutorials7.5 hours
- Life Cycle 2 - LabPractical Work27 hours
Mandatory Prerequisites
You must be enrolled in HAV210B in order to enroll in HAV209B as well.
Among the course units in the L1S1 program, you must have successfully completed:
HAV101V From Molecules to Cells: Students are expected to have a solid understanding of the components of the cell and their functions
HAV107B From Cells to Organisms: Students are expected to have a solid understanding of the functions performed by any multicellular biological organism, as well as an understanding of the diversity of these organisms
HAV108B From Organisms to Ecosystems: Students are expected to have a basic understanding of the relationship between an organism and its environment
Recommended prerequisites*:
In addition to the knowledge covered in L1S1, it is recommended that students have experience solving high school-level problems in Mendelian genetics, understand the processes of mitosis and meiosis, and know the differences between these two processes.
Knowledge Assessment
Mastery of the skills covered in this course unit will be assessed on an ongoing basis through lab reports, homework assignments (genetics exercises), and written exams.
