Description

In this EU, we will explore each stage of the life cycle of organisms (mainly metazoans and angiosperms) through a series of practical exercises covering: embryonic development (including organ formation, cell differentiation, and growth processes), the acquisition of reproductive capacity (including the stages associated with meiosis and gametogenesis), and fertilization. This series of practical assignments is combined with a series of tutorials addressing issues related to the transmission of genetic information.

Objectives

By completing this course, you should be able to identify, using histological sections, the cell types responsible for the dynamics of development, growth, and reproduction in angiosperms and metazoans; and solve Mendelian genetics problems involving effects related to dominance, sex, and epistasis.

Mandatory prerequisites

You must be enrolled in HAV210B in order to also enroll in HAV209B.

Among the L1S1 course units, you must have validated:

HAV101V From molecules to cells: a good understanding of cell components and their functions is expected.

HAV107B From cells to organisms: students are expected to have a good understanding of the functions performed by all multicellular biological organisms and an understanding of the diversity of these organisms.

HAV108B From organisms to ecosystems: a minimum level of knowledge about the relationship between an organism and its environment is expected.

Recommended prerequisites:

Beyond the knowledge acquired in L1S1, it is recommended that students have solved Mendelian genetics problems at the high school level and are familiar with the processes of mitosis and meiosis and the differences between these two processes.

Knowledge assessment

The acquisition of skills in this course unit will be assessed on a continuous basis through practical work reports, homework assignments (genetics exercises), and written exams.
