Description
In this course, we cover each stage of the life cycle of organisms (mainly metazoans and angiosperms) through a series of practical exercises covering: embryonic development (including organ development, cell differentiation and growth processes), acquisition of reproductive capacity (including stages associated with meiosis and gametogenesis), and fertilization. This series of practical exercises is combined with a series of tutorials on the transmission of genetic information.
Objectives
By following this course, you should be able to identify on histological sections the cell types responsible for the dynamics of development, growth and reproduction in angiosperms and metazoans; and solve Mendelian genetic problems combining dominance, sex and epistasis effects.
Teaching hours
- Life Cycle 2 - TDTutorial7,5h
- Life Cycle 2 - Practical workPractical work27h
Necessary prerequisites
You must be registered in HAV210B to be able to register in HAV209B.
Among the L1S1 UEs, you must have validated :
HAV101V From molecule to cell: a good knowledge of cell constituents and their function is expected
HAV107B From cells to organisms: we expect a good understanding of the functions performed by all multi-cellular biological organisms, and a knowledge of the diversity of these organisms.
HAV108B From organisms to ecosystems: a minimum knowledge of the relationship between an organism and its environment is expected
Recommended prerequisites* :
In addition to the knowledge acquired in L1S1, it is recommended to have solved Mendelian genetics problems at high school level, and to be familiar with the processes of mitosis and meiosis, and the differences between these two processes.
Knowledge control
The acquisition of skills in this unit will be assessed on a continuous basis through practical work reports, homework (genetics exercises) and table-top exercises.
Syllabus
Practical exercises :
- Embryonic development, cell differentiation and growth in metazoans
- Cell growth and differentiation (primary and secondary meristems) in angiosperms
- Sporo- and gametogenesis in angiosperms
- Gametogenesis in mammals; fertilization in sea urchins
