Description

Knowing how to acquire and process data is an essential skill in a professional scientific and/or technical context. The objective of this course is to address three types of standard know-how in the professional environment:

- Advanced use of spreadsheets/plotters (MS EXCEL, LO-CALC) for scientific and technical use

- Network interconnections: infrastructure, TCP-IP protocol suite, security

- Introduction to relational databases (MS ACCESS, LO-BASE) - concepts & vocabulary, creating queries, graphical reports, forms.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

- Efficiently process data using one of the most widely used tools in the professional world: the spreadsheet program. To do this, the most advanced features of MS-EXCEL and LO-CALC (matrix formulas, solver, dynamic tables and graphs, support of complex numbers...) are presented through concrete examples: Curve fitting, regression, numerical derivatives and integrations, filtering by fast Fourier transform, analysis of information extracted from databases, extension of native functionalities using VBA or LO-BASIC...

- Insert and configure equipment (computers and other instruments of a data acquisition and processing chain) in an intranet-type network infrastructure.

- Extract, analyze and format information from a relational database.

o Creation of different types of queries and presentation of the SQL language

o Creation of forms, reports, charts and pivot tables

Syllabus

Many data processing solutions more or less specialized exist but some are considered as standards and it is desirable to master them in order to hope to become professionally integrated by being quickly efficient. This is the case of spreadsheet/graphers type tools.

On the other hand, having a good knowledge of network infrastructure is becoming increasingly useful in the field of instrumentation. For example, during the development or maintenance of an experimental setup, it is now common to set up a functional acquisition chain involving scientific and technical instruments with ethernet type interfaces.

Finally, in an industrial context where the volume of data collected is very important, it is often centralized in database systems. It is therefore important to know how to access this information efficiently in order to carry out an analysis.
