Description
This course lays the foundations for our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution, from the astrophysical processes involved in small-scale star formation to environmental effects on very large scales. A two-pronged approach will be used, with both theoretical and observational aspects.
Objectives
To provide training in the theoretical framework and interpretation of observations needed to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies from an astrophysical point of view, as well as current issues.
Necessary prerequisites
Recommended prerequisites :
Astrophysics
Observational Astrophysics Workshop 1
General relativity and cosmology
Knowledge control
Written final exam.
Syllabus
- Cosmology prerequisites
- Physical properties of galaxies and their environment
- star formation
- unresolved stellar populations (and link to evolution)
- galaxy dynamics
- groups and clusters, large structures
- Observational techniques
- large surveys, observational biases, galaxy soundings
- studies of galaxies in different spectral ranges (from UV-visible to radio)
- spectroscopic properties / spectroscopic techniques (especially resolved spectroscopy)
