Description
This EU lays the foundations for our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies, from the astrophysical processes involved on small scales in star formation to the effects of the environment on very large scales. A dual approach will be used, with theoretical aspects on the one hand and observational aspects on the other.
Objectives
Provide training on the theoretical framework and interpretation of observations that enable an understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies from an astrophysical perspective, as well as current issues.
Mandatory prerequisites
Recommended prerequisites:
Astrophysics
Observational Astrophysics Workshop 1
General relativity and cosmology
Knowledge assessment
Final written exam.
Syllabus
- Prerequisites for Cosmology
- Physical properties of galaxies and their environment
- star formation
- unresolved stellar populations (and link to evolution)
- galaxy dynamics
- groups and clusters, large structures
- Observational techniques
- large surveys, observational biases, galaxy surveys
- studies of galaxies in different spectral domains (from UV-visible to radio)
- spectroscopic properties / spectroscopy techniques (in particular resolved spectroscopy)
