Presentation
Created in 1992 by Professor Jacques Percebois, the Energy Economics program at the University of Montpellier has been training applied economists specializing in energy issues for over thirty years. It provides students with the skills they need to understand the challenges and anticipate the consequences of the structural transformations facing the energy sector: decarbonization and decentralization of production methods, changes in market models and energy pricing, development of new energy uses, etc.
The Master's program maintains close ties with public and private stakeholders in the energy sector, who regularly participate in conferences, professional seminars, and consulting projects, enabling students to apply their skills to meet the sector's specific needs.
The advantages of the training program
Possibility of completing the second year of the Master's degree as an apprenticeship.
Objectives
The Master's program aims to train students in the expertise of energy markets, public policy, and the challenges posed by the low-carbon transition. The courses offered enable them to acquire in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of energy markets and the mechanisms of interdependence with environmental markets. They use a wide range of empirical analysis tools, particularly in the field of climate and energy policy evaluation (applied to the transport, industry, and construction sectors), as well as for setting up and financing energy projects (renewable energy or energy efficiency). The program also offers introductory courses on the regulatory aspects of the energy sector and the legal framework applicable to renewable energy projects.
Know-how and skills
• Understand how energy markets (gas and electricity) and environmental markets (CO2 quotas, guarantees of origin, energy savings) work, as well as the regulations in force
• Assess the sectoral impacts of climate and energy policies (transport, construction, industry, etc.)
• Mastering the economic, financial, and legal aspects related to the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects
• Acquire a solid understanding of energy/environment market regulation
• Conduct technical and economic studies applied to energy production, transportation/distribution, and supply
• Develop a comprehensive view of the energy world and the ability to anticipate future developments in the sector

Professional integration
The rapid transformation of the energy sector driven by climate imperatives and energy transition policies, as well as the global energy crisis, have reinforced the need for skills in these areas within companies and organizations, thus opening up numerous professional opportunities for students on this program.
Graduates of the Master's in Energy Economics program are destined for careers as economists/analysts specializing in France and internationally in the energy industry (energy producers and suppliers, energy network managers, brokers, aggregators), finance (banks and financial institutions), consulting firms, research firms and think tanks, and public administrations (regulatory authorities, ministries, local authorities, international organizations).
