- Master's Degree in Environmental Law and Management and Sustainable Development
Academic Director: Catherine RIBOT
The Master's degree in ENVIRONMENTAL LAW AND MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT has been accredited since 1999-2000 at the University of Montpellier.
This highly attractive degree program trains specialized lawyers responsible for implementing environmental and sustainable development policies in the public and private sectors.
Training available as initial and continuing education (current professionals wishing to retrain, job seekers).
The regulatory framework for the environmental sector is now complex and overwhelming, and both public authorities and businesses are faced with restrictive regulations when it comes to managing their environments and resources, the risks inherent in their activities, preventing or repairing damage caused by pollution, and adopting a regional sustainable development strategy in the context of ecological transition.
This rapidly expanding sector has reshaped the job market, generating numerous opportunities and new professions in both the public and private sectors.
This Master's program is designed to provide comprehensive legal training (M1) that is also cross-disciplinary and multidisciplinary, covering law, management, political science, and economics, and taking into account the current needs of the job market.
Objectives
The field of the environment and sustainable development is now one of the major social demands, the recognition of which has resulted in an increasingly complex and elaborate institutional and regulatory framework at the international, European, and national levels.
In this context, public authorities and businesses alike are faced with a plethora of regulations governing how they manage their environments and resources, mitigate the risks inherent in their activities, prevent and remedy pollution, and adopt a sustainable development approach.
This Master's program offers students professional training that combines a theoretical approach with a practical focus, knowledge, and expertise.
The aim is to train students over two years in environmental law professions, providing them with knowledge, skills, and expertise (through specific and wide-ranging contributions from professionals) in a sector that now offers excellent prospects in terms of career opportunities and employment (in both the public and private sectors).
Know-how and skills
Develop legal expertise, assist public and private organizations with any environmental issues, conduct a territorial assessment, know how to implement a sustainable public procurement policy in a public authority, be able to analyze a company's energy choices, know how to conduct a CSR assessment in a company, a carbon footprint assessment, or even use GIS software to plan the installation of a wind farm, etc.
For each major area of environmental law—biodiversity, water, pollution, waste, renewable energy, etc.— the courses are systematically combined with presentations by professionals: lawyers (environmental and urban planning litigation), environmental managers from local authorities (Occitanie Region), legal affairs officers in public institutions (OFB, ONEMA), directors of consulting firms, environmental managers from large groups (EDF EN, URBASOLAR, COLAS Midi Méditerranée, etc.) exposing students to fieldwork and practical case studies; business games, regional assessments, responding to calls for tenders, etc.
Graduates of this Master's program will therefore be able to develop legal expertise, manage any environmental issues in public or private structures, carry out a territorial diagnosis, implement a sustainable public procurement approach in a public authority, analyze a company's energy choices, know how to carry out a CSR assessment in a company, a carbon footprint assessment, or even use GIS software for the implementation of a wind farm.
