Description

This course is common to both the CSIM and Biomechanics tracks. It combines skills in the mechanics of rigid bodies and imaging. It applies to problems in biomechanics, robotics, and many other fields related to motion analysis, such as “motion capture” for video games. It consists of a theoretical component—including lectures and tutorials—and a practical component—laboratory sessions conducted in collaboration with the STAPS department.

Objectives

The objective of this course unit is to analyze motion using an inverse dynamics approach. This involves using motion capture data from a model system (in this case, a human), obtained through a system of cameras and sensors, to reconstruct the motions of each segment. Next, using the laws of dynamics and force platforms, we determine the forces generated at the connections between the segments (or joints). This data can then be used to size the connections and segments during the design process or to analyze the forces in the joints from a biomechanical perspective.
