Presentation
If the question of spatial coexistence of all human activities has always been a major issue in human societies, it is even more so nowadays, imposing often delicate trade-offs between agriculture, livestock farming, extraction activities, transport, industry, commerce, towns and leisure activities.... The complexity of these trade-offs is compounded by the significant contemporary degradation of the physical environment (climate change, various forms of pollution, etc.) and the biotic environment (disappearance of natural areas, erosion of biodiversity), whose impact on the health and well-being of human populations is undeniable.
So, with the harsh reality of global change, social pressure and a restrictive legislative framework, but with limited budgets, governments, local authorities, businesses and associations.... are being forced in the short term to integrate environmental, ecological and societal concerns into their activities. Environmental management and land-use planning have become interdependent and their synergy essential.

Objectives
By placing human activities at the heart of a sustainable and co-sustainable approach, the aim of the GIEBioTE master's program is to train people to reconcile human activities and environmental preservation. They will be multi-disciplinary professionals at the interface of environmental management and regional planning.
GIEBioTE is a "professionalizing" course. While it does not prepare students to become involved in research, it does prepare them to apply the scientific knowledge acquired through research. It is therefore important to note that application draws on the rigorous scientific knowledge of different sciences (ecological, environmental, geographical, etc.).
Know-how and skills
These skills are developed and acquired throughout the Master's program (M1 and M2).
- Be able to diagnose a situation, a problem or any other issue related to environmental or sustainable development issues, making critical judgments based on an interdisciplinary approach.
- Be able to analyze environmental issues more specifically from the angle of land and biodiversity management
- Be able to integrate conservation, biodiversity, management and environmental protection aspects into regional management and development projects, taking into account the social and economic dimensions.
- Be able to take a stand, develop an intervention plan (scenarios, policies, programs, projects, guidelines, procedures, intervention strategy, implementation strategy, steps, etc.) with a view to bringing about change.
- Be able to manage projects (development, planning, execution, closure).
International training
Double degrees, joint degrees, Erasmus MundusInternational dimension
An entirely Franco-Quebec-based program, GIEBioTE is co-sponsored by the Université de Sherbrooke - CUFE Centre Universitaire de Formation en Environnement et Développement Durable - Maitrise de l'Environnement and the Université de Montpellier - Faculté des Sciences - Master Gestion en Environnement. It is therefore a bi-degree master's program: the Université de Montpellier and the Université de Sherbrooke register each student for each year of the program, and each validates the master's degree.
Year 1 must be spent in Sherbrooke for both semesters (plus summer internship). The first semester of Year 2 must be spent in Montpellier. The second semester of Year 2 consists of an internship or trial period.
Organization
Knowledge control
Year 1; under the responsibility of the Université de Sherbrooke and in accordance with the terms and conditions in force at this institution. Canadian progression standards are restrictive: a cumulative average of 2.7 /4.3 is required at the end of each semester of the M1 to be authorized to continue in this bi-diploma program.
Year 2: depending on the teaching unit: Continuous or terminal assessment, oral. Internships and projects are assessed by a specific continuous assessment based on a written report and a presentation to a panel of experts.
Special features
All the elements below are detailed on the GIEBioTE master's website https://ingenieurs-ecologues.com/candidater-parcours-giebiote/ and https://ingenieurs-ecologues.com/frais-inscriptions-et-bourses-giebiote/ and https://ingenieurs-ecologues.com/informations-importantes-aux-etudiants-francais-qui-candidatent-ou-qui-sont-admis-en-m1-giebiote/
- The application period runs from early February to early April.
- Applications must be submitted to both universities independently, for a joint decision by the teaching team during the application period.
- Canadian progression standards are restrictive (especially in M1): a cumulative average of 2.7 /4.3 is required at the end of each semester to be authorized to continue in this bi-diploma program.
- GIEBioTE is an international training program at French university tuition fees (for French students).
Internships, tutored projects
Internship | Mandatory |
---|---|
Length of internship | 3 months in M1 and 5 in M2 |
Internship abroad | Possible |
Duration of internship abroad | 3 months in M1 and 5 in M2 |
The M1 internship is compulsory for all students in the program: it is a short internship (≈ 3 months) carried out primarily in Canada. However, some students who wish to do so may do so in France or in countries other than Canada.
The M2 internship is compulsory for French students or those under the primary administrative responsibility of the UM: it is a long internship (≈ 5 months) that can take place in France or abroad (excluding Canada).

M1 - Integrated Management of the Environment, Biodiversity and Territories

Admission
Access conditions
Given that GIEBioTE is a bi-diploma diploma, and that Canadian universities do not recognize Licences Pro and other professional BTSA-type diplomas as equivalent to the Canadian Baccalauréat, no admission of these graduates will be possible.
Entry to the two-year bi-national program is only possible during the autumn session of M1 in Sherbrooke. In other words, applications are only accepted for entry into M1. No applications will be accepted for this pathway between M1 (first year) and M2 (second year).
Access to the GIEBioTE master's program is possible via the French continuing education system, but must include two years of training and a full year in Canada.
Target audience

Tuition fees
GIEBioTE is an international training program with French university tuition fees (for French and EU students), and Canadian university tuition fees (for Canadians).
Capacity
20 (including Canadian students)
Necessary prerequisites
One of the major prerequisites is linked to the international nature of the diploma and its compulsory validation by the Canadian partner university: the candidate must present a CUMULATIVE average over his or her Bachelor's years equivalent to the minimum Quebec requirement of 2.7/4.3, which in the French system usually corresponds to 12/20, for the entire university curriculum.
This requirement to validate semesters/sessions to a minimum threshold of 2.7 /4.3 remains in effect throughout M1 and is required to continue in the double degree program and for admission to M2 (see additional information).
The prerequisites are the competencies of the bachelor's degrees required for entry into M1 or their equivalent (see target audience).
Recommended prerequisites
Experience of various kinds (internships, extracurricular activities, work experience, associations, volunteer work, etc.) in the following areas is welcome
- Development aid
- Humanitarian aid
- Agroecology
- Nature conservation or protection
- Territory management
- Environmental management
- Scientific communication
- Participatory science

Further studies
GIEBioTE is not designed to prepare students for further study (doctoral thesis). Its generalist, multi-disciplinary content and the operational skills developed are not suited to this pursuit.
However, very rare finalized research projects involving an environmental research laboratory may correspond to certain profiles of GIEBioTE graduates (among other things, they must have completed an internship in applied research).
Studying abroad
The possibility of pursuing a finalized, multidisciplinary thesis is greater in Canada (or North America) than in France or Europe, but remains extremely limited.
Bridges and reorientation
No applications will be accepted for this pathway between M1 (first year) and M2 (second year).
Pour les étudiants non autorisés à poursuivre dans le bi diplôme GIEBioTE en cours du M1 (note cumulative < à 2,7/4,3)
- There is no automatic admission to another GE course, either during the academic year (semester 2) or the following year.
- However, for the remainder of the current academic year, they benefit from UM student status. This means that they can carry out internships outside the curriculum , for reorientation or consolidation purposes, with a view to applying for another Master 1 in the GE field, or in another Master field the following year, or to entering the professional world.
For students who do not wish to continue in the GIEBioTE bi-degree program at the end of the M1 course
- There is no automatic admission to the M2 of another GE course.
- They can apply in year 2 for another GE course or another field;
- They can apply to join a regular course at the University of Sherbrooke, but lose the financial advantages of the double degree (tuition fees payable to UdS) and are no longer UM students.
