Created in 1992 by Professor Jacques Percebois, the Energy Economics program at the University of Montpellier has been training applied economists specializing in energy issues for over thirty years. It provides students with the skills they need to understand the issues and anticipate the consequences of the structural transformations facing the energy sector: decarbonization and decentralization of production methods, changes in energy market and pricing models, development of new energy uses... 

The Master's program maintains close ties with public and private players in the energy sector, who regularly take part in conferences, professional seminars and consulting projects, enabling students to apply their skills to meet the concrete needs of the sector.

Objectives

The aim of the Master's program is to train students to become experts in energy markets, public policy and the issues raised by the low-carbon transition. The courses offered enable them to acquire in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of energy markets and the mechanisms of their interdependence with environmental markets. They mobilize a wide range of empirical analysis tools, particularly in the field of climate-energy policy evaluation (applied to the transport, industry and building sectors), as well as for setting up and financing energy projects (renewable energy or energy efficiency). The course also includes introductory courses on regulatory aspects of the energy sector, as well as the legal framework applicable to renewable energy projects.

Know-how and skills

 - Understand how the energy (gas and electricity) and environmental (CO2 quotas, guarantees of origin, energy saving) markets work, and the regulations in force.

- Evaluate the sectoral impacts of climate-energy policies (transport, building, industry, etc.)

- Master the economic, financial and legal aspects of developing renewable energy and energy efficiency projects.

- Acquire a solid understanding of energy/environment market regulation

- Carry out technical and economic studies applied to energy production, transmission/distribution and supply

- Develop a global vision of the energy world and the ability to anticipate future developments in the sector.
