Description

Within biotechnologies, the production of recombinant proteins in various prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems represents a mature and attractive technological field with high employability. It is also a very important area of research in which many challenges remain to be met. The bioproduction of biomedicines (recombinant proteins and monoclonal antibodies) represents a major challenge for human therapeutics, but also for the many fields of biotechnology (environmental, industrial, agronomic, marine, etc.). Before designing any biological drug involving a biomanufacturing stage, it is essential to be familiar with the different eukaryotic and prokaryotic expression systems used in biotechnology, and to have a complete overview of the biomanufacturing panorama and challenges in France, Europe and the rest of the world.

This course includes interactive lectures. It is taught by various academic and industrial contributors involved in the field.

Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide students with skills in the following areas:

-bioproduction market and challenges in europe and worldwide

in-depth knowledge of the various prokaryotic and eukaryotic expression systems and their optimization, including :

protein production in prokaryotic cells (optimization, large-scale production, examples of research and development)

-yeast cell production, in particular Pichia pastoris

-production in baculovirus and insect cell systems

-production in transgenic plants-production in mammalian cells-production and purification of membrane proteins.

The EU program will keep pace with technological developments in the field, and is therefore likely to evolve according to the participants involved.

Necessary prerequisites

In-depth knowledge of cellular and molecular biology and biochemistry is required.

Students in the M2 Biology-Agroscience / IBION-Tec and M2 Biology-Health / IBIS programs will be given a week's intensive practical experience in the form of a project directly linked to this UE, as part of the UEs "Multidisciplinary lab project 1: from gene to protein, Strain construction & lab scale production" (UE HAV916V).
