Paleoecology and biostratigraphy

The aim of this course is to acquire, reinforce and synthesize notions and knowledge in evolutionary paleontology, sedimentology and paleoecology, and apply them to the fossil world. Together, these notions provide the keys to infer the stratigraphic context and the past environments in which extinct organisms lived.

Presentation of techniques and methods in paleontology; principles, methods and interest of stratigraphy; dating methods in relation with stratigraphy (biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy); stratigraphic correlations 

Paleoenvironments: characterization of present-day environments (marine, continental) and their fossil analogues; paleoenvironmental reconstruction (Proterozoic-Pleistocene) using fossils, the nature of sediments and sedimentary structures

Application of all the concepts covered in the course of the course, paleoenvironmental and faunal variations during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, around the Pic Saint-Loup.
