Presentation
The "diplôme d'état de docteur en médecine" entitles the holder to practice medicine in France.
Training benefits
In accordance with article L.4111-1 of the French Public Health Code, no one may practice medicine in France unless he or she is :
1. holder of a diploma, certificate or other qualification mentioned in article L.4131-1 ;
2. French nationals, Andorran nationals, or nationals of a member state of the European Community, a member state of the Agreement on the European Economic Area, a country bound by an establishment agreement with France, Morocco or Tunisia;
3. registered with the Ordre des Médecins, this last condition being subject to the fulfillment of the first two.
These conditions are cumulative.
By way of derogation, French, Community or foreign doctors who do not meet one or both of the first two conditions set out in article L.41111 of the French Public Health Code may be authorized to practice medicine by individual order of the Minister of Health.
All doctors practicing in France must be registered with the French Medical Council (Ordre de la Santé Publique), failing which they will be prosecuted for illegal practice of medicine (article L.4161-1 of the French Public Health Code; penalty: 2 years' imprisonment, 30,000 euros fine - article L.4161-5 of the French Public Health Code).
Program
Teaching for the state diploma of doctor of medicine is organized into cycles of study.
Students embarking on medical studies must validate :

- Diplôme de Formation Approfondie en Sciences Médicales - DFASM (4th to 6th year)
Then 3 to 5 years of post-graduate studies (different lengths depending on the specialty chosen)

Diplôme de Formation Générale en Sciences Médicales
The Diplôme de formation générale en sciences médicales (DFGSM) comprises six semesters of training validated by the award of 180 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits, corresponding to the bachelor's degree level.
PASS : 60 ECTS
DFGSM 2: 60 ECTS
DFGSM3: 60 ECTS
Diplôme de Formation Approfondie en Sciences Médicales (Advanced Training Diploma in Medical Sciences)
The second cycle of medical studies is devoted to training in general medicine and hospital internships introduced by the decree of April 8, 2013.
It comprises six semesters of training validated by the award of 120 ECTS corresponding to the Master's level.
DFASM1: 40 ECTS
DFASM2: 40 ECTS
DFASM3: 40 ECTS
3rd cycle of medical studies
The third cycle of medical studies is based on the Examen Classant National (ECN). Depending on their ranking, students choose their future specialty from among 11 disciplines:
- medical specialties
- surgical specialties
- general medicine
- anesthesia - intensive care
- medical biology
- medical gynecology
- gynecology-obstetrics
- occupational medicine
- pediatrics
- psychiatry
- public health and social medicine
Each discipline corresponds to one or more Diplomas of Specialized Studies (DES).
The Diplôme d'Etat de Docteur en Médecine is awarded after :
- validation of the Diploma of Specialized Studies
- the successful defense of a thesis at the end of the internship, during which the student takes the Hippocratic oath.

The length of postgraduate studies varies from 3 years (general medicine: Bac +9) to 5 years (other specialties: Bac +11).

Admission
Target audience
Medical studies require solid scientific knowledge, a strong aptitude for reasoning, a great capacity for deduction and synthesis, but also rigor, self-sacrifice, regularity and consistency in work. Only the most motivated students will have the chance to succeed.
