This course covers the various fundamental elements necessary for understanding natural and artificial radioactive phenomena. The goal is to establish a comprehensive understanding of concepts related to radioactive decay, natural radioactive families and their associated environmental impacts, dating methods, methods for producing radionuclides and their applications in various fields, as well as anthropogenic contributions. Various examples from fields such as industry, nuclear energy, radiochemistry, geochemistry, and nuclear medicine will be used to illustrate the basic concepts covered.

The purpose of this module is to enable students to compare experimental results with their theoretical knowledge. Particular attention is given to writing up results and presenting them in the form of oral presentations. The work is organized into an eight-hour session for which the students choose a topic. They record their results and analyses in a lab notebook modeled after the protocols used in laboratories. At the end of the semester, students select a topic, which they develop into a final report that they defend orally. This course serves as preparation for the internships students will complete during their program.

Examples of available experiments: optical spectroscopy (IR, visible), gamma, X-ray, and acoustic spectroscopy; low-temperature photoluminescence; near-field spectroscopy (AFM, STM); electron microscopy...

The range of experiments offered covers the areas of physics taught in the various physics tracks. Students must choose from among these experiments those that best align with their interests. Significant effort is made to incorporate new data-acquisition technologies and the use of computer tools to compare experimental results with theory.

This required course enables students to consolidate the fundamentals of biochemistry acquired in the first year of undergraduate studies by approaching the discipline through a cross-disciplinary study of enzymes involved in cellular metabolism, particularly glycolysis. Several areas of biochemistry will be covered: the fundamentals of Michaelis-Menten enzyme kinetics and a description of the metabolic reactions involved in glycolysis. Finally, the technical aspects will be addressed through the presentation and analysis of techniques used to measure enzyme activity and to purify, quantify, and detect proteins.

Laboratory work in various fields of physics.

The topics covered include the study of mechanical and electrical oscillatory systems (simple pendulum, torsion pendulum, coupled pendulums, RLC circuits, inductively coupled circuits), acoustic waves, and some concepts of wave optics (diffraction and interference), the practical application of electronic circuits to the study of electrical components or systems (diodes, LEDs, and photodiodes; transmission lines); and the study of certain properties of matter (magnetism, the photoelectric effect, and the Faraday effect).

In the first part of this course unit, a general overview of radiation-matter interactions will be presented, covering the various types of interactions and their associated detection methods. The second part will cover all aspects of radiation protection, focusing on the effects of radiation on living matter as well as appropriate protective measures for humans and the environment.

This course is an introductory course with no prerequisites on scientific image processing, in the context of both physics and the medical sciences.

Starting with the fundamentals of digital image coding, we will introduce the main techniques aimed first at improving image quality and then at extracting quantitative data from images. The course will cover deconvolution, noise reduction, thresholding, segmentation, Fourier transforms, and wavelets.

We will conclude by discussing the specific challenges posed by image sequences (films) or 3D images, such as MRI data in a medical context.

The tool used will be the MATLAB/Octave programming environment.
