Presentation

The master's degree created in 2011 at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier (UM1) by Prof. Pierre Dujols and Prof. Laurent Visier, is in line with recent developments in the management of chronic diseases.

Health actors are called upon to participate in the development of research skills in the fields of perceptions of illness, the social organization set up around it, the structuring of networks and health education. This research must be based on knowledge in the life sciences and in the human and social sciences in order to be able to apprehend "hybrid objects". It is now at the interface between knowledge from the life sciences and the humanities that the most important changes are taking place. From then on, the strict division between human sciences and life sciences is no longer operative. Researchers investigating the field of chronic disease must be able to address health issues in their dual biological and social dimensions.

New skills are required to conduct high-level research on long-term illnesses, chronicity, life extension and disability.

Objectives

To qualify research professionals who combine bio-medical or health care knowledge with innovative human and social science perspectives in the consideration of chronic diseases.

The humanities and society specialization trains health researchers in the following fields of human and social sciences: sociology, psychology, philosophy, anthropology, communication sciences, education sciences, and political sciences.

It opens the possibility of doing a doctorate in these disciplines. Students who have completed a Master's degree in this specialization must be able to conduct research in one of the above disciplines.
