Overview
The interdisciplinary Master’s program in economics and political science, titled “Governance of Societies and Territories in Transition” (GSTT), builds on the dual-degree program in economics and political science, established in 2021 at the University of Montpellier, which provides students with a high-level education in both disciplines. Building on this foundation, this Master’s program is open to students who have received a solid education in the social sciences, particularly in Economics and Political Science. It will prepare students for careers in fields of the future or in evolving sectors.
The curriculum for the Master’s in Economics and Political Science has been designed with an eye toward the major challenges that are transforming the way our societies and regions are organized: energy and ecological transitions, transportation and mobility, health, digital technology… as well as democratic and cultural transitions and institutional changes.
This multidisciplinary master's program, the only one of its kind in France, brings together, in a balanced way, the economics and political science departments at the University of Montpellier.
Objectives
The goal is to create a program of excellence at the bachelor’s and master’s levels for students wishing to specialize in the field of public policy analysis, using a multidisciplinary approach, in order to train public sector executives and managers with a high level of expertise in economics and political science. The goal is to train future specialists in the governance of societies in transition, enabling them to understand, analyze, and develop—at the regional level—public policies tailored to major societal challenges.
Expertise and Skills
- Understand, analyze, and anticipate the public policies best suited to addressing major societal challenges.
- Understand the key sectors undergoing transformation (energy, transportation, healthcare, education, digital technology, migration, artificial intelligence, etc.).
- Design, manage, and implement public or private projects.
- Understand the interplay between various territorial levels and the diverse public and private stakeholders involved
- To enable students to develop their skills in using digital tools.
- Apply analytical methods and tools through (group) projects on topics related to territorial transitions.

The goal is to train professionals who, with expertise in economics and political science, will be able to hold positions of responsibility in the public and private sectors, both in France and internationally.
Graduates of the master's program in "Governance of Societies and Territories in Transition" can pursue a wide range of careers focused on study, expertise, or research.
Where?Local governments, engineering firms, consulting firms in France and abroad, urban planning agencies, monitoring agencies, associations, international organizations, research centers, etc.
