Description
In the field of bioprocess engineering, an understanding of the metabolism of catalysts (cells, microorganisms) is essential. This research unit will focus on characterizing the diversity of valuable microbial metabolites (primary and secondary metabolites) and the bioprocesses that utilize these microorganisms to produce these molecules.
This course unit includes interactive lectures, tutorials, and practical exercises (lab work in the computer lab + independent project-based work in small groups).
Objectives
By the end of this course unit, students will have acquired the technical and theoretical knowledge related to the commercialization of products of microbial origin. They will be able to use tools to discover new molecules with commercial potential.
Class Hours
- Bioprocess Engineering - Metabolism and Bioproduction - LectureLecture6:00 p.m.
- Bioprocess Engineering - Metabolism and Bioproduction - TutorialTutorials3 hours
- Bioprocess Engineering - Metabolism and Bioproduction - LabLaboratory Work6 hours
Mandatory Prerequisites
Theoretical and technical knowledge in microbiology, biotechnology, and biochemistry (L3 level—Bachelor’s degree in biology or equivalent)
Recommended prerequisites:
Knowledge of chemistry and ecology
In addition, the use of these microbial catalysts in bioreactors for the production of metabolites of interest will be addressed in the supplementary course HAV811V, “Bioprocess Engineering—Batch.”
Knowledge Assessment
Assessment is based on a comprehensive continuous evaluation system (CCI). The course grade takes into account the scores earned on oral exams, practical assignments, and the final exam.
