Presentation

The bioinformatics training program at the University of Montpellier celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2021. Backed by a multi-disciplinary teaching team and a solid network of companies and laboratories that regularly welcome its trainees, it offers students from bachelor's degrees in computer science, mathematics, biology or bioinformatics the opportunity to acquire master's-level knowledge in bioinformatics.

Training benefits

The course is supported by research teams in computer science and biology (LIRMM, ISEM, IRMB, IGH, etc.), which encourages exchanges between researchers and students.

Every year since 2013, the course has organized the Montpellier Omics Days (https://www.montpellier-omics-days.fr/), a scientific event around "omics" (genomics, transcriptomics, ...) that brings together around a hundred people through conferences and workshops.

A teaching innovation laboratory, the BioInformatics Learning Lab (BILL), has been set up to perpetuate innovative teaching practices involving students from a number of different courses.

Finally, the program has a very active student association and alumni network.

Objectives

The scientific objective of the specialization is to train multidisciplinary scientists with in-depth skills in :

  • Analysis of data from living organisms (statistics, algorithmic processing, data mining), whether at the level of sequences, -omic data, molecular structures, expression data, etc.
  • Design of methods, tools, databases and information systems to process this type of data,
  • Program in a variety of IT environments in line with the
biological context, by analyzing needs, designing solutions and adapting to specific constraints,
  • Distribute and present analysis results.

Bioinformatics

The Bioinformatics master's degree currently comprises a single course of the same name. It enables students from different bachelor's degrees to acquire complementary skills during the 1st semester of M1 , via teaching units(UE) adapted to their background. Then, from the 2nd semester of M1, they can train in bioinformatics through core business courses. Two groups of optionalcourses in S2 and S3 give the program an IT or biology/health focus.

For more information, return to the mention level where general information is given, or go down to the level of the 2 years of M1 and M2 training.

Professional integration

Students can work as engineers or researchers in both the public and private sectors. In the private sector, they can work in an R&D team, whether in a major corporation or in an innovative SME. Alternatively, they may occupy managerial positions and eventually project manager positions in Digital Services Companies (ESN) for the production of dedicated software tools. Graduates of the Bioinformatics Master's program may also go on to complete a thesis, with the aim of becoming a researcher, teacher-researcher or research engineer in bioinformatics.
