Description
This module focuses on an approach to experimental techniques in chemistry. A first part will be devoted to the presentation of the rules of hygiene and safety in the chemistry laboratory. Each lab session will be preceded by a preparatory lab session. At the end of each lab session, the student will have to write a laboratory notebook/report (analysis, exploitation of results...).
Objectives
- Acquire the practical basics in the laboratory (weighing, dilution, etc.)
- To follow the rules of hygiene and safety
- Understand an experimental protocol, implement it with care and rigor, and analyze and interpret the results obtained.
- Use the appropriate course concepts
- To carry out common assemblies in chemistry
- Use of precision equipment (glassware, scales, etc.) and analysis of uncertainties.
- Analyze, exploit and criticize experimental results
- Learn to report on an experiment/manipulation
Necessary pre-requisites
Chemistry basics equivalent to a science high school diploma
Knowledge control
full continuous assessment
Syllabus
Practical basics in laboratory, hygiene and safety rules.
Topics covered:
- Determinations and balances: acid-base, redox, complexation, precipitation...
- Separative methods and purification techniques: thin layer chromatography, column chromatography, liquid/liquid extraction, recrystallization, distillation, filtration...
