Presentation
Water management is crucial to ensuring the availability of this vital resource for all ecosystems and human societies. These micro-certifications in hydrology were designed by Marine Rousseau, a lecturer in Water and Soil Sciences at theFaculty of Sciencesofthe University of Montpellier.
The advantages of the training program
Two micro-certifications have been developed:
- Micro certification in General Hydrology - Level 1: June 15 to 19, 2026
- Advanced Hydrology Micro Certification - Level 2: June 17 to 19, 2026
Objectives
Provide water stakeholders and managers (government departments, local authorities, elected officials, associations, consulting firm employees, and any employee interested in water management issues in the context of climate change) with the necessary fundamentals in hydrology, hydraulics, and hydrometry to enable them to engage in discussions with all their counterparts, including experts in the field.
Know-how and skills
Global competencies:
- Understanding the components and processes of the large water cycle
- Knowledge of methods for acquiring measurements in hydrometry and in situ infiltration (field practice and data processing using appropriate digital tools)
- Knowledge of the basics of hydrological and/or hydraulic modeling (for non-experts, depending on the group and requests made prior to the training)
More targeted skills:
- Knowing how to delineate the boundaries of a watershed and calculate its geometric characteristics
- Knowing how to spatially interpolate rainfall data
- Knowing how to determine peak flows with defined return periods in order to size hydraulic structures
- Know how to determine a runoff coefficient based on the infiltration capacity of a soil and the decomposition of a flood hydrogram.
- Knowing how to determine a water balance for different systems, at different spatial and temporal scales
- Knowing how to measure the saturated hydraulic conductivity of soil in situ (theory and practice)
- Mastering river gauging techniques (theory, practice, data processing)
- Knowing how to interpret data from the DRIAS Climate and DRIAS Water websites (climate projections).
Program
The micro-certification course "Hydrology - Adapting territories to climate change" consists of 35 hours of training spread over 5 days of face-to-face teaching at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Montpellier.
