Overview
Developed within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the professional bachelor’s degree program in “Industrial Trades: Metallurgy, Material Forming, and Welding,” with a specialization in “Welded Assemblies,” builds on a curriculum with a strong emphasis on welding.
Furthermore, it is important to highlight the awarding of the International Welding Technologist (IWT) certification by the French Welding Association (AFS), which adheres to a standardized description of graduates’ competencies at the international level. This certification has become essential for any company in the mechanical engineering sector to be able to respond to numerous calls for bids, for which it is required.
The training program addresses a high demand within the industry, which needs to recruit professionals in welding-related fields—ranging from specialized welders to welding engineers—and which currently still finds very few qualified candidates in the job market.
By training about 20 Level II welding coordinators who hold IWT certification each year, the IUT de Nîmes is one of five centers in France—and the only public institution—to award this certification.

Objectives
To train technologists who are capable of serving as “welding coordinators” (Level II), implementing quality management and monitoring for welded manufacturing, acting as a resource person within the company by advising on the selection of manufacturing, inspection, and quality control equipment, keeping abreast of technological developments, and applying new technologies.
Expertise and Skills
Skills acquired:
- Ability to review and approve manufacturing procedures in accordance with welding requirements: the development of DMOS, their qualification, and monitoring of their implementation,
- be able to monitor regulatory developments, track changes, and manage welding procedures,
- be able to monitor welders' qualifications and participate in their training,
- Serve as the workshop's point person for organizing activities and resolving welding issues.
Program
The program is open to students enrolled in work-study programs under an apprenticeship or professional training contract.
This program involves 32 to 33 weeks of on-the-job training spread over 3 periods and 19 to 20 weeks of training at the training center, also spread over 3 periods.
The learner is supported by two mentors: one is an academic mentor, and the other is appointed by the company. The two mentors work together to help the learner earn a degree and secure a job.
The program consists of 502 hours of classroom instruction and includes preparation for and the exam for the International Welding Technologist (IWT) certification.
The program includes a supervised project totaling 130 hours, which culminates in a written report and an oral defense.
