Description

This second unit of general chemistry aims to consolidate and deepen the study of reactions in aqueous solution, especially those involving the formation of metal complexes. The principles of thermodynamics will be presented and applied to the study of chemical equilibria of biological interest. Rather than a presentation using mathematical formalism that would require a much larger time commitment, the student will be asked to understand the physical meaning of these principles and the main thermodynamic functions and to apply them to chemical systems, often of biological interest. In particular, resting membrane potentials and the use of pH potential diagrams in biology will be presented.

The students will work before certain courses and tutorials on course documents (written and audio) so that the classroom teaching in courses and tutorials can allow them to be fully involved in the training, to understand the concepts presented and the skills to be acquired.

Objectives

To give biology students the basics in aqueous solution chemistry and thermodynamics in order to be able to apply these notions to account for a chemical phenomenon of biological interest. The domain of knowledge and skills to be acquired is the following

Applications of the law of mass action to the study of chemical equilibrium in aqueous solution. The notions presented in L1 will be deepened and completed by the study of complexation reactions

Metal complexes, application in biology

The principles of thermodynamics and the functions of thermodynamics to understand chemical equilibria that can be coupled, the resting membrane potential and the applications of potential pH diagrams in biology.

The objective of this course is to provide biology students with the basic knowledge and skills to apply them to the understanding of biological processes

Necessary pre-requisites

All the concepts presented in the general chemistry course for biologists in L1

In order to ensure that students have not acquired these notions in L1, course documents, accompanied by video and application exercises will be provided. All these notions will be assumed to be acquired and will be subject to evaluation.
