Objectives
To enable dental surgeons to specialize in pediatric dentistry, by mastering the specialties involved in the care of children and/or adolescents, as well as sick and/or disabled children. The DIU provides knowledge in prevention, oral and dental therapeutics, management of rare oral and dental diseases, and traumatology. It also includes the monitoring of patients under sedation, sedative premedication, sedation by nitrous oxide inhalation (MEOPA) or general anesthesia.
Know-how and skills
- Implementation of preventive measures, particularly with families of children with early-onset caries (CPE), and introduction to therapeutic education for children and their families.
- Prescribe and interpret complementary examinations (panoramic X-rays, cone beams, CT scans), integrating the principles of radiation protection for growing children.
- Diagnose and treat the main oral pathologies in children: individual caries risk assessment, RCI, periodontal diseases, orofacial functions and dysfunctions.
- Diagnose various syndromic dental anomalies of genetic or non-genetic origin.
- Assess medical risks (infectious, hemorrhagic) in different situations.
- Know how to assess and manage children's pain and anxiety, master anesthetic techniques and adapt them to clinical situations.
- Implement various oral therapies under sedation, premedication, MEOPA inhalation or general anesthesia.
- Understanding oral surgery in children.
- Understanding prosthetics in children.
- Responding to emergency situations, particularly oral trauma, and collaborating with Maxillofacial Surgery specialists.
- Communicate and collaborate with children's specialists from other medical and paramedical disciplines.
